April 2020

Dear Parents,

2020 had been tough. Mainly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Unlike SARS back in 2003, we are dealing with a global scale matter. Never the less, I am THANKFUL to have you all with us here at Happy Kids. It is your support that gave us the strength to continue to take on the responsibilities to educate and nurture the little ones.

Although many events had to be canceled or postponed due to the pandemic, I am also thankful that this year's Reading Challenge went exceptionally well! Together, our Day Program children managed to read a total of 4,753 books throughout March! Parents, thank you for reading to/with your child at home. Reading is something that I can emphasize for days. It's more than just a skill needed; it's about the exposure. By establishing a daily reading schedule (for at least 10 to 15 minutes) will create a tremendous impact on their learning experience later in the elementary school years. If you haven't had a chance to read to your child regularly, don't feel bad, it's never too late to establish a good reading schedule at home!

Below is this month's Principal's Note. As always, if there's anything I can be helpful with, please feel free to drop me an email anytime.

Alvin C. Yen

February-March 2020

posted Feb 23, 2020, 7:20 PM by Alvin Yen

Dear Parents,

Happy belated New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful Lunar New Year with your little ones! Although we are still in the middle of battling the COVID-19, I would like to reassure you that our Happy Kids team was, still is, and will always be placing your child's safety and wellbeing before everything else. As the program principal, it has been a very busy year. Yet I am very thankful for all the support coming from our parents. To have you all recognized our effort in early childhood education means a million to all of us here at Happy Kids.

Since your child had been off from school for five weeks, we will be using the next three days to ease our children back to their regular school routines. Then as we move on to March, we will begin the month with the Annual Reading Challenge. The theme this year is "A Race through Space." One of the windows or doors from each class will be decorated as one of the eight planets! Your little one will be helping Bailey and as he travels through the solar system! We are aiming for a total of 3,000 books for this year's challenge. Don't forget to check our Facebook page for the update!

As for reading itself, I can't stress enough of how important it is as part of your child's early developments. I've had parents came to me and asked questions about the reading to their little ones at home. For your child, at such a young age, it has to be fun and engaging! Meaning that instead of just you (parent) reading aloud, try to pause and ask them questions. It can be as simple as "My dear, tell me, what's the color of this?" (if your little one is between the age of 2-3), or questions like "What do you think will happen at the end of the story?""Why do you think he/she do that?" (for little ones between age 4 to 6). Asking good questions can be a fantastic way for you and your child to start a meaningful conversation/discussion, which will further their comprehension! Besides, you can always pause the book and share your observations with your child. It's always good for them to hear from you!

Below is the Day Program Principal's Note for February and March. Enjoy this year's reading challenge! As always, should you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out.

August-September 2019

Dear Parents,

It's hard to imagine that we are at the beginning of another new school year! I hope you all had a wonderful summer and can't wait to learn more about it! Now that we are getting back to the regular school routines, please allow me to remind you of the importance of giving your little one enough rest throughout the week. Even at Kindergarten age, it would be ideal if the Kindergarteners can get at least ten hours of sleep daily, not to mention little ones who are younger. It is always a wise idea to find a proper schedule and stick with it, at least throughout the weekdays. By having enough rest at home, I am sure your child will be ready for all the fun activities we provided here daily!

As always, I've attached my Principal's Note below. Should you have any questions about your little ones or our programs, please don't hesitate to contact me. Remember, I'm just an email/phone call away!

Dear Parents,

As we wrapped up the annual reading challenge, on behalf of the Happy Kids faculty staffs, I would like to THANK YOU all for keeping up the reading at home with your little one. Just because we completed the challenge does not mean we are doing with our daily reading. Please continue to keep up the good reading habit as part of your daily routines; it's very important for your little one getting enough of that reading exposure.

As for reading, it's more than just you doing storytelling with your child. It can turn into a Q&A session, as well as using the illustrations to make up your own story (especially when reading with younger children, between the age of 2 to 4). As you all know, reading fluency takes up years of practice and exposure to be accumulated. If you haven't done much reading with your child, it's never too late to start. Try to begin with 5-minute reading time, and gradually move on to 10 to 15 minutes per day. I firmly believe that you, as a parent, will for sure see the progress along the way. If you would like to know more about what you can do when reading to/with your child, please don't hesitate to reach out! I am only a phone call/email away!

March 2019

Dear Parents,

It was during our weekly meeting with the program director, Ms. Wang, that we both couldn't help to realize how fast a school year can be. It's almost March! Speaking of March, meaning that we are going to start one of my favorite school-wide events- The Reading Challenge! This year, our young readers will be riding the Magic School and on an incredible journey in search for the one and only- Ms. Frizzle! One of the windows or doors from each class will be decorated as one of the themes from the Magic School Bus series, don't forget to check it out when you drop by!

Reading, unlike many other skills in early-childhood development, requires years of practice of exposure. If you already established a reading routine at home, congratulations! Please continue to keep it up. If not, it's never too late to set up a daily reading time with your child, starting with 5 to 10 minutes, and gradually set it for 25 to 30 minutes, by the time they are in Preschool or Kindergarten. If you have any questions regarding what to read, how to read with your child or anything else that are reading-related, please don't hesitate to let me know, I will be more than happy to share some of the tips with you.

Below is the Day Program Principal's Note for March. As always, I firmly believe that with your support along the way, us here at Happy Kids can provide the best education to your little ones! Thank you, and enjoy this year's reading challenge!

Dear Parents,

It's been a few months that since my last time updating the Day Program Happenings. Ever since the previous update, we celebrated Halloween, Thanksgiving, and the main event of the year- the Annual Day Program Christmas Concert! Other than having fun with all the events we celebrated, I am also thankful for your cooperation along the way, as always, your child can never have achieved all these goals without your love and support from home.

As we stepped into the year of January, we will be celebrating Chinese New Year with the CNY Potluck on 1/22, followed by the 100th day of school celebration on 1/24! The purpose of CNY Potluck is a wonderful opportunity for all parents, teachers, and our little ones to get together. I am looking forward to reuniting with you all once again!

Below is the Principal's Note for this month. Should you have any questions regarding the on-going themes or any school-wide activities, please don't hesitate to contact me!

Wish you all a Happy 2019!

October 2018

posted Oct 8, 2018, 8:15 PM by Alvin Yen

Dear Parents,

Happy October! This is usually the time of year where you can feel the change of weather. Besides weather, your little one had changed quite a bit as well! They are more adapted to the new routines and teachers and probably had already shared what they did at school with you. Little things from a new song introduced, or a story read by the homeroom teacher the day before. At Happy Kids, we cherish all these little moments, which reflects our founder, Mrs. Wang's philosophy of "process over product." We can never do this without your support from home. Thank you for standing with us all along.

October is another busy and fun month! Teachers will have their Professional Development Day on the 17th, followed by the Parent-Teacher Conferences on the 18th and 19th. Then move on to the Halloween performance on the 29th! This year, each class host their performance in their classroom. We will start with Kindergarten and Preschool (10:30-10:50), followed by Nursery A, Nursey B, and Reception (11:00-11:20). Have you talked to your little one about what they are going to be this year? I am not too sure what I want to be this year, yet either way, we always ended up with a blast on Halloween!

Below is the Principal's Note for October, as always, if there's anything I can be helpful with, please don't hesitate to give me a ring!

September 2018

Dear Parents:

Being a teacher/principal at Happy Kids for the past twelve years. It is always a pleasure to see all of our little ones grow, little by little. It is also an honor to witness their progress, from teary morning to waving goodbye with a happy smile! Being the principal, I am always thankful for your support and cooperation along the way. Our child can never achieve all these goals without you!

As we stepped into September, I would like to take this chance to remind you all that our Day Program Open House will be on the 18th of September, between 6:30 to 7:00. It is an excellent opportunity for you to get to know what your child's teacher had been doing in the classroom. Regarding how they run their center time, why they run it this way, and what are they expecting to achieve with these centers. They will also be sharing what you can do at home to help to strengthen and connect the learning experience from home. I look forward to meeting you all again!

Below is the Principal's note for September. A book where we usually have more than a copy in our library! If you are interested in my book selection, please don't hesitate to contact me, I would be more than happy to share them with you!

Good day, Parents!

It's good to have our little ones back! I can't describe that joy of seeing our old friends returning and having new friends starting the same time. The first few weeks can be quite a challenge, to both parents and our children. Getting used to the routines, new teachers and friends can take up some time. With your support, I firmly believe it will be a smooth transition for you and your child.

If it's your child's first time coming into a school setting, you, as a parent, may have questions that you want to ask. As the program principal, it will be my pleasure to be there and support you. There's no such thing as a "silly question." Please don't hesitate to talk to me (or email me: ayen@happykids.taipei) if there's anything I can be helpful with!

Below is this month's Principal's Note, along with important dates, my book of the month recommendation, and Love and Logic tips that you will find it useful. Thank you all, returning parents, for the love and support! As for the new parents, welcome to the Happy Kids family!

Summer 2018

Dear Parents,

Words can never express our appreciation towards the support throughout this past school year. THANK YOU all for allowing us to play our role as your child's early educator. It's always a joy to see them grow and shine in their own way.

We wrapped up the Curious George theme and visited Leo's Playland during the last week of June. As for the first two weeks of July, we will focus on the 2018 World Cup in Russia, along with fun games and activities and field trip with GDS Sports! The theme for the last two weeks of July will be "International Food Festival." Where our little ones will learn about various healthy food choices along with the culture behind them!

Below is the Principal's Note for July, along with useful tips and my monthly book recommendation. As always, feel free to email me (ayen@happykids.taipei) if you have any questions!

Have a great summer, see you all in Fall!

Alvin C. Yen
